Admission is open for (i) Research Programmes [Ph D / M Sc (Engg)] (ii) Course Programmes [ME/M Tech/M Des/M.Mgt] (iii) Integrated Ph D Programmes and (iv) External Registration Programmes (Ph D only) at the Institute. Eligibility criteria, specialization, areas of research and other details are available at our website www.iisc.ernet.in/admissions. Candidates who are yet to complete their qualifying examinations and expect to complete all the requirements for the degree (including all examinations, project dissertation, viva-voce etc.) before July 31, 2012, are also eligible to apply.

Ph D in Interdisciplinary areas: Bioengineering, Mathematical Sciences, Nanoscience and Engineering.
ELIGIBILITY
Candidates possessing a minimum of second class in the following degrees are eligible to apply:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an appropriate field of Engineering/Technology/Architecture/ Medicine/ Agriculture/ Pharmacy/ Veterinary Sciences; or Master’s degree in Science in an appropriate field including Biotechnology, or Master’s in Economics, Geography, Social Work, Psychology, Management, Mathematics, Statistics, Commerce, Operations Research, Computer Science/ Application as applicable to the respective departments.
Qualifying in one of the following appropriate Tests (with validity as on 1st of August 2012) is mandatory : CSIR-UGC NET for JRF; or UGC-NET for JRF; or DBT JRF; or ICMR JRF; or JEST 2012; or NBHM 2012; or IISc Entrance Test 2012; or GATE 2011/2012. Qualifying in these tests is not mandatory but desirable for candidates who possess a Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/ M Sc(Engg) or MS or MBA (post BE/B Tech) and wish to apply for the departments in the Engineering Faculty, including those candidates awarded with INSPIRE Fellowship.
IISc Entrance Test is conducted in Atmospheric Sciences, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Ecological Sciences, Mathematics, Management Studies, and Materials Science subjects.
(ii) COURSE PROGRAMMES [ME/ M Tech/M Des/M.Mgt]

(a) Master of Engineering (ME) in Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Microelectronic Systems, Signal Processing, Systems Science & Automation, and Telecommunication Engineering.

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates possessing a minimum of second class in Bachelor’s degree in appropriate field of Engineering/ Technology or equivalent degree with valid GATE score are eligible to apply.
Selection is based on valid GATE score only.
(b) Master of Technology (M Tech) in (i) Electronic Systems Engineering,(ii) Computational Science , (iii) Climate Science, (iv) Transportation & Infrastructure Engineering and (v) Instrumentation.

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates possessing a minimum of second class in the following qualifying degree with valid GATE score are eligible to apply:
Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field of Engineering/Technology; or Master’s degree in Science, Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Statistics, Geology, Instrumentation, Electronics or Master’s in Computer Application as applicable to the respective departments.
Selection for (i), (ii) , (iii) and (iv) is based on an aptitude test and interview subsequent to short-listing based on valid GATE score and for (v) based on valid GATE score only.
(c) Master of Design (M Des) in Product Design & Engineering

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates possessing a minimum of second class in Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Design / Architecture with valid GATE/CEED scores are eligible to apply.
Selection is based on a Design Aptitude Test and interview subsequent to short-listing based on valid GATE / CEED scores.
(d) Master of Management (M.Mgt)

IISc uses CAT scores for short-listing the candidates for M.Mgt programme. IIMs have no role either in the selection process or in the conduct of the programme.

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates possessing a minimum of first class in Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology or equivalent degree with a valid GATE/CAT scores are eligible to apply.
Selection is based on a group discussion and interview subsequent to short-listing based on valid GATE / CAT scores.
(iii) INTEGRATED Ph D PROGRAMMES
in (1) Biological Sciences, (2) Chemical Sciences, (3) Physical Sciences and (4) Mathematical Sciences.

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates possessing a minimum of first class in Bachelor’s degree in Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Biological Sciences, (including Pharmaceutical, Veterinary Sciences and Agricultural Sciences), Mathematical Sciences, or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology as applicable to respective disciplines.
The short-listing of candidates for interview is based on the performance in the IISc Entrance Test 2012.
(iv) EXTERNAL REGISTRATION PROGRAMMES (Ph D only)
External Registration Programme (ERP) is the Research programme for working professionals from (1) R&D Organizations / Industries and (2) for Faculty members from Engineering, Agricul
tural, Pharmaceutical, Veterinary, Medical Colleges/ Universities, recognized by the appropriate government agencies. The candidates must be officially sponsored by their employing organization.
Ph D in Science: All the Science departments as indicated in (i) except Neuroscience, High Energy Physics and Solid State & Structural Chemistry.
Ph D in Engineering: All the Engineering departments as indicated in (i).

ELIGIBILITY

Qualifications remain the same as for the regular candidates. Further, the candidates should have two years of continuous service in a permanent position in the present organisation Age: NOT higher than 40 years as on 01.04.2012.
Desirable: Qualifying in one of the tests;IISc Entrance Test,CSIR-UGC NET for JRF,UGC-NET for JRF, DBT JRF,ICMR JRF, GATE,
NBHM, etc.
Selection will be based on candidate�s performance in the interview to be conducted at IISc.

Reservation for OBC/SC/ST/Physically-Handicapped(PH) and Kashmiri-Migrant(KM) candidates: As per the Government of India regulations. Grade/Class of qualifying examination is relaxed to a ‘pass class’ for SC/ST candidates.

IITM Financial Assistance for MTech Programmes

Selected GATE Qualified Candidates and IIT B.Tech. Graduates admitted to M.Tech. programmes are eligible for Financial Assistance.
Financial assistance in the form of Half-Time Teaching Assistantship (HTTA) at the rate of 8,000/- per month (tenable for a maximum period of 24 months) will be awarded to Indian nationals doing the M.Tech. Programmes, subject to Institute rules. HTTA students are required to assist the department for 8 hours of work per week related to academic activities of the department such as laboratory demonstration, tutorials, evaluation of assignments, test papers, seminars, research projects, etc. The number of seats available under HTTA are indicated in the ‘Programmes’ link.
A few assistantships may also be offered by some government organizations such as Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, and Aeronautical Research and Development Board, etc.
A few seats are available without HTTA (N-HTTA, i.e., without any financial assistance) in some M.Tech. streams as indicated in the ‘Programmes’ link. Candidates can opt for either HTTA (code ending with Y), or N-HTTA (Code ending with N), or both, in a particular M.Tech. stream. The eligibility criteria for HTTA and N-HTTA categories are the same.
Provision exists for the candidates who have joined M.Tech. streams under N-HTTA category to convert to HTTA at the end of one semester depending on the vacancies in HTTA category and on the basis of their performance in the first semester examinations.
DAE-GF Scheme:
DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme (DAE-GF) in various engineering disciplines is offered by Department of Atomic Energy. GATE qualified candidates selected under this scheme will get a fellowship of 20,000/- per month. After successful completion of M.Tech. Programme, the DAE-GF fellows will be placed in one of the DAE units. For further information visit the website: www.hrdbarc.gov.in.
AERB-GF Scheme:
Under Atomic Energy Regulatory Board Graduate Fellowship (AERB-GF) Scheme, upto three candidates will be selected either from Mechanical Engineering (Design / Thermal Engineering) or Nuclear Engineering or Chemical Engineering discipline or from both and they will be offered a monthly stipend of 20,000/- per month for two years with a one time educational material allowance of 5,000/-. IITM Admission Procedure for GATE Qualified Candidates

Admission to candidates (who are not required to take suitability test) will be finalized strictly in the order of merit as per the GATE Score (CGPA for IIT Graduates) and on the basis of choices given by them in the application.
The short-listed candidates who are to be examined for suitability test shall report at IIT Madras, Chennai – 600 036 and appear before the committees tentatively on 21st & 22nd April, 2012. The exact date and time will be intimated to the eligible candidates.
For M.Tech. programmes in Ocean Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and Mathematics, candidates are requested to report at the office of the Head of the respective Department.
Candidates with XE/XL paper in GATE have to report at the GATE office.
Persons with Physical Disability (PD): For PD candidates with any category of disability (viz., blindness or low vision, hearing impairment, locomotor disability or cerebral palsy), benefit will be given to only those who have at least 40% permanent physical impairment in relation to a body part/system/extremity/ whole body, etc. Such candidates must submit, along with the Application Form, the certificate of disability from the authorized medical board attached to one of the following: Vocational Rehabilitation Centre (VRC) for Physically Handicapped persons /Special Employment Exchange for Physically Handicapped/ Government Hospital (District and State level).
First set of offers for HTTA and N-HTTA seats are likely to be sent in the first week of May 2012. The candidates have to send their acceptance together with prescribed fees within 10 days of offer to The Chairman, M.Tech. Admission Committee, GATE Office, IIT Madras. Second and subsequent offers may be made depending on the availability.
Updating
There is a possibility of updating the branch/stream for the candidates who have already accepted the offer of admission, depending upon the availability of vacancies subsequently. Please note that during the updating, depending on the indicated order of preference, it is possible for a candidate to switch from a HTTA seat to a N-HTTA seat if N-HTTA is higher in order of preference given by the candidate.
Spot Admission:
(Only for applicants who are called for spot admission)
Depending upon the final number of vacancies and availability of seats in different streams before the closure of admissions, some of the candidates, who have already applied but could not secure admission in the first, second and subsequent offers will be informed to appear before the Admission Committee at GATE Office of the Institute with relevant documents and fees. The list of candidates called for spot admission will also be displayed on the web. The number of vacant seats available will be indicated at that time. Admission will be offered for HTTA and N-HTTA vacant seats on the spot to suitable candidates as per the procedure indicated above. They should join immediately by paying the fees. This is an additional opportunity provided and hence candidates should be prepared to take the risk of not getting a seat. Candidates appearing for Spot Admission will have to travel at their own expense. If all the seats are filled during the first, second and subsequent offers, spot admission may not be operated.
Reporting for admission:
GATE qualified candidates who accept the offer of admission must produce completion certificate of their qualifying degree examination and join the Institute on 25th July, 2012 (Wednesday) forenoon. Sponsored candidates also should report for admission on 25th July, 2012 (Wednesday) afternoon. Selected candidates will have to pay various fees and deposit amounts as indicated in the offer letter. The candidate must produce a medical fitness certificate from a Registered Medical Practitioner in the format which will be enclosed along with the letter of offer of admission.
In all matters relating to admission, the decision of the M.Tech. Admission Committee is final.

IIT Madras Suitability Test

Who are all required to come for suitability test? And when?
The short-listed candidates who are to be examined for suitability test shall report at IIT Madras, Chennai – 600 036 and appear before the committees tentatively on 21st and 22nd April, 2012. The exact date and time will be intimated to the eligible candidates.
Suitability test is required for M.Tech. programmes in the Department of:

Yes, a candidate can apply for a maximum of 8 programmes.

OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates can also specify if they belong to the ‘minority’ class during application. Such candidates should attach the ‘minority’ declaration form (Click here to download). Do I have to send semester registration fees along with the application form?

No, you should not send semester Registration fee along with the application form.

How will I know the status of my application?

Yes, you can view/print the application form later by checking the application status and by using your M.Tech. application number and password, which was sent to you by email.

Can I change the preferences after submitting the application?

Changes (if any) in the application contents should be sent as a separate request along with a copy of the completed application. Based on a “signed” document only, corrections will be incorporated. Changes in choices or order of preference will not be entertained after 20-04-2012.

I have missed to take a print of my application at the end of my application process. How will I get access to it?
Yes, you can view/print the application form later by clicking the ‘Application Status’ link in this website and by using your M.Tech. application number and password. After successful registration of the application, you will receive an email with your application number and the password.

When and how do I know whether I have been offered a programme?

First set of offers for HTTA and N-HTTA seats are likely to be sent (by email and speed post) in the first week of May 2012. Second and subsequent offers may be made depending on the availability.

What are the documents I have to send along with the offer acceptance?

The candidates have to send their acceptance, ORIGINAL GATE Scorecard together with the demand draft(s) for the prescribed fees within 10 days of offer to:

Can I withdraw after accepting the offer?
Yes. We shall return the ORIGINAL GATE scorecard by SPEED POST within one/two days of receiving your signed letter/fax mentioning that you are withdrawing from the M.Tech admission process to IIT Madras. We shall retain 1000/- as processing fees, and the balance amount will be returned within a month.

After declining the offer can I be considered for further offers?
No.

Is there any chance for me to move up in my preference and what am I supposed to do for that?

There is a possibility of updating the branch/stream for the candidates who have already accepted the offer of admission, depending upon the availability of vacancies subsequently. Please note that during the updating, depending on the indicated order of preference, it is possible for a candidate to switch from a HTTA seat to a N-HTTA seat if N-HTTA is higher in order of preference given by the candidate.

Can I send the photocopy of my GATE scorecard?
No. You need to send the ORIGINAL GATE scorecard only. This is to ensure that a candidate does not accept offers of admission from more than one institute.

I am doing an M. Tech. programme and I have submitted my GATE scorecard to the college. Am I eligible to apply for an M. Tech. programme at IIT Madras using the same GATE scorecard?
If you are already receiving HTTA at another institute, then you are not eligible for an M. Tech. Programme at IIT Madras.

 What is spot admission?
Depending upon the final number of vacancies and availability of seats in different streams before the closure of admissions, some of the candidates, who have already applied but could not secure admission in the first, second and subsequent offers will be informed to appear before the Admission Committee at GATE Office of the Institute with relevant documents and fees. The list of candidates called for spot admission will also be displayed on the web. The number of vacant seats available will be indicated at that time. Admission will be offered for HTTA and N-HTTA vacant seats on the spot to suitable candidates as per the procedure indicated above. They should join immediately by paying the fees. This is an additional opportunity provided and hence candidates should be prepared to take the risk of not getting a seat. Candidates appearing for Spot Admission will have to travel at their own expense. If all the seats are filled during the first, second and subsequent offers, spot admission may not be operated.

Can I change to another M. Tech. programme after a semester?
No.

Will I be eligible for conversion to Ph. D. programme?
M.Tech. students will be eligible for conversion to M.S./Ph.D. if they satisfy the following criteria:

The candidate should have successfully completed a minimum of 2 semesters in the M.Tech. programme.
The candidate should have a minimum CGPA of 8.0 in the prescribed courses.

A committee duly constituted by the Head of the Department will consider such applications for conversion to M.S./Ph.D. and make its recommendation.

Two Valid GATE Scorecards and Requirements for admission to MTech at IIT Madras

I have two valid GATE scorecards of GATE 2011 and 2012 for the same paper. Which scorecard shall I submit?
You need to use the scorecard having the higher score.
 I have two valid GATE scorecards of GATE 2011 and 2012 for two different papers. Can I use both scorecards?
Yes. In such case, apply twice once with GATE 2011 score card and next with GATE 2012 score card.
I have a valid GATE score. What are the minimum requirements for admission to M.Tech. programmes at IIT Madras?

Half-Time Teaching Assistantship HTTA

What is HTTA? What is N-HTTA?  
Financial assistance in the form of Half-Time Teaching Assistantship (HTTA) at the rate of Rs.8,000/- per month (tenable for a maximum period of 24 months) will be awarded to Indian nationals doing the M.Tech. programmes, subject to Institute rules. HTTA students are required to assist the department for 8 hours of work per week related to academic activities of the department such as laboratory demonstration, tutorials, evaluation of assignments, test papers, seminars, research projects, etc. The number of seats available under HTTA is indicated in Table 1.
A few seats are available without HTTA (N-HTTA, i.e., without any financial assistance) in some M.Tech. Streams as indicated in Table 1.
Provision exists for the candidates who have joined M.Tech. Streams under N- HTTA category to convert to HTTA at the end of one semester depending on the vacancies in HTTA category and on the basis of their performance in the first semester examinations.

Can I apply for both HTTA and N-HTTA seats?  

Candidates can opt for either HTTA (code ending with Y), or N-HTTA (Code ending with N), or both, in a particular M.Tech. stream. The eligibility criteria for HTTA and N-HTTA categories are the same

  2. Candidates graduating/graduated from IITs with B.Tech degree and having C.G.P.A. of 7.5 and above for SC/ST and 8.0 and above for others can apply without GATE Score.
  3. Candidates sponsored by various organizations recognized by DST as Research and Development units, candidates sponsored by NIOT or from educational institutions approved by AICTE/UGC/ Government or from Government/Public Sector Undertakings.
  4. QIP candidates
  5. UOP candidates of various organizations/industries as per the MoU with the Institute
