Its All About Good GATE Prep Books

We all know GATE is a standard exam .We have gone through the GATE syllabus in our college days .GATE syllabus is the same as the syllabus which we have been studying during our four years of college ,but why it seems so tough for us?

As I have mentioned gate is the standard exam, it will check our basics and quality in our preparation .Quality in preparation means how deep and how strong we are in the topic .To maintain the quality in our preparation, we need good books.

What difference a good book could make and what low standard books fail to do?

A good book should make us think deeply about the topic it covers ,it will raise thousands of doubts about the topic and low standard books will just work as a refresher guide, so it won’t help us to go deeply into the topic .But helps you memorize and we will be satisfied by thinking we have completed the topic .On the other hand ,doubts will help us to search from various sources and if all our doubts gets clear then we will be very strong in those topics .This is how we are expected to study .Even the exercise problems from the good book, has a concept awaiting for you to learn after solving it. This could help us to realize the concepts practically .Low standard books fail to maintain an organized way of explaining the concepts .These books will cover the syllabus and important questions that is expected to repeat in the semester exams .We know GATE won’t work that way ,so these books are not recommendable .

How to read these GATE books?

Standard books will be using standard English .So that we should be requiring a dictionary by our side .Topics in these books won’t be so lengthy but it covers everything about the topic in two to three pages. Rest of the details are explained in terms of derivations. So we should not skip even a single word or derivation .We should be strong enough in the language of mathematics, to understand the concept behind derivations and formulas .If you don’t have much time to prepare, then you should try at least to go through worked-out examples.

Mental Preparation For GATE 2014

It is always good to prepare GATE 2014 after completing final year of college. If you ask me why, that would force me to ask this question to you: Which among these is classic? Test cricket or T20? I will say test cricket, because it will test your whole character as a cricketer. For playing test cricket your mindset should be very strong. So is preparing for GATE after completing your college. GATE 2014 exam preparations will check your patience especially. Before taking this path, you should ask yourself some questions.

Are you really passionate about GATE?

What are all the good stuff that will happen after achieving in gate?

If you are really passionate and if you know the good stuff that is going to happen after GATE, you could start preparing for gate by preparing your mindset.

Few important things that we have to concentrate on

1.Patience

2.Positive thinking

3.Discipline

4.Concentration

5.Speed

6.Being happy and active

Patience:

Like test cricket, patience plays a very important role in GATE preparation. First, being calm and patient will help you maintain good mindset. Things that you want will come to you one way or the other if you try hard. So, being patient will help you to focus on the winning part and push you to keep on trying. Sometimes, you may lose patience when you can’t solve the simple problems that your friends could do easily or you may not be able to understand even the simpler concepts. In that case you should try to get the answers by referring books or the internet and learn to maintain your patience. This is what education is all about- “searching”. One should not lose patience and give up or reduce the goals at any point of time.

Positive Thinking:

Being positive always helps to boost up your attitude towards facing problems. There will be times when fear will start to play its part. It will check you like bouncers from fast bowlers. You might get scared about the whole GATE exam if you check the statistics and see the number of people who actually clear GATE each year against the number of applicants. Sometimes, your peer’s intelligence will bother you so much that you can’t concentrate on your natural strength. Always knowing your strength and concentrating on that will help you to win this fear. Courage, the will to challenge and a ‘nothing to lose mentality’ forms weird combination but it will always help. Initially comparison won’t help.

Discipline:

This word might seem boring for most of us. But it is very powerful when it comes to long term preparation. Maintaining a proper schedule helps to avoid time wastage. Things like early rising, healthy food habits, avoiding smoking and drinking, regular to classes and time management helps you to maintain a pressure free composure. Unhealthy habits may affect your immunity and very useful days might get wasted. So avoiding smoking and drinking helps in maintaining a pleasant mood.

 Concentration:

During GATE classes or during GATE self study, concentration plays a key role. It doesn’t matter how much time we spend in a day to study, its about how deeply we concentrate while studying. Sometimes, we force ourselves to prepare for two to three hours but while revising we can’t remember anything. This is due to lack of concentration. Little bit of meditation daily might help.

 Speed:

After completing all the GATE syllabus, one should start concentrating on speed. How fast could you come out with the concept behind a problem and what formula to be used? solving more aptitude problems set will help improve your speed.

Being active and happy:

During preparations one may get frustrated very badly. Thousands of negative questions may arise in your mind and it will lead to break down. At that time, you might end up giving up, or your mind will force you to be lethargic. Going in one more round when you don’t think you can, thats what makes all the difference in our lives. During the peak of the GATE preparation like in the month of January, you might lose control and start to waste your time in movies, facebook, chatting etc. You could try to avoid those things gradually. 5 to 10 mins of listening music is good and is a healthy way of refreshing.

If we strictly follow all these things, GATE exam is all yours.

Do what you believe and you will be surprised by the outcome.

Cracking GATE 2014 – Preparation Tips and Study Materials

To cracking the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE Exam) opens the ways to opportunities in higher education. The GATE is the test that sees intense competition for seats in post-graduate courses in engineering and sciences in top institutes in the India is administered by the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc). Though a separate test is conducted in many states in India for admission into M.Tech and ME courses first preference for filling up the M.Tech and ME seats is given to GATE Score. Some institutions specify GATE mark as mandatory even for admission of self-financing students to join  postgraduate programmes. Over the past few years, the number of applicants for GATE has increased for various reasons like changes in pattern, Public Sector Undertakings (PSU Jobs) considering GATE scores for recruitment, attractive career options for post-graduates and the urge to stand out among the increasing number of engineering graduates among others. “GATE 2013 scores would be considered as the merit criterion by organisations such as Powergrid, BHEL, IOCL and NTPC, for recruitment to the posts of Executive Trainees and Management Trainees. Preparation for GATE comes handy for other PSU exams like CIL, SAILGAIL etc and also campus recruitment interviews,”.

Things to know to Crack GATE 2014

Pre-final year students ie third year students are not be eligible for GATE 2013. “But this should not affect preparation of pre-final year students who plan to appear for GATE when eligible, as it is always better to start early and revise towards the end. Out of the 21 optional in GATE, only one can be taken in a particular year. There is no restriction on which optional you can take in GATE. How to Prepare for GATE 2013 in Four Months

There goes a saying that striving for success without hard work is like trying to harvest where you haven’t planted. For any achievement life requires thorough preparation. Likewise the desire to crack GATE is a dream of all, but only few come out triumphant, those who realize the need to be honest, work hard towards it and invest every moment in it. So the question is that, do u see yourself as one them?
A sincere insight into the preparation procedure can help you realize that no matter how many months you have it is just not enough- too little time and too much to do. Including the general aptitude and maths paper, there are more than 10 papers to be prepared. So plan your work, allocate days for each subject prepare accordingly. Besides studying the papers you also need to practice the previous year questionnaire. So make use of every second and stay focused.
A lot of us want to move mountains but few of us are willing to practice on small hills. So if you have higher goals, prepare accordingly. The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today. GATE is a national affair. So if a month of sleepless nights can help you achieve it so be it- you never know the guy next to you may as well beat your position because he studied while you dozed your days off.

So those notifications on Facebook and hangout with friends can wait for a little. With this tight schedule, you will not even have time to look up from your books because this could change your life. A good opportunity is waiting for you if you give it a good try and always remember luck is where opportunity meets preparation.
Time and tide wait for none. So to avoid any kind of time waster is strongly recommended. Few days are left for the exam and it is time to make the most of it. It is time you work hard and fill in the loopholes in your four year long engineering course. Fundamental preparation is always effective. What are you waiting for? Stop thinking and start doing. Do it once, do it right and get it over with. Either you will make it happen or you will be satisfied that you tried your best.
Luck be with you!

Preparing for the GATE 2013

Prospective engineers especially who is preparing for the 2013 session are already accustomed to this term- GATE 2013 examination. However, here a brief note on the exam is being given to help you know the yet unknown facts. Moving in detail, you will get information on different aspects of this aptitude test.
Gate 2013 Exam Pattern:
Applicants should prepare for a single paper, (According to the bachelor stream) to appear in the examination. The duration of the exam will be three hours and the paper will consist of 65 questions as usual. The hundred-number question paper mostly contains MCQ (Multiple Choice Type Question). For one single question, you will have four options to choose the right answer. Students should answer the questions carefully because of negative marking. Overall, no such changes have taken place for GATE 2013 exam pattern.

How to Apply for Gate Exams, 2013
For this session, the process of applying for the exam will be done online and students can fill up the form from the GATE’s official website. After filling the form, you have to receive a printout of the online application form. You can use the online banking facility or can download a challan to pay the examination fees. Here it needs mention that for GATE 2013; all transactions will be done through SBI only.
Recent changes in GATE exam:
A few changes have taken place in GATE 2013 exams rules and regulations, which the students should be aware of. Just check the points below to know about the changes in detail.
  • Good news for female candidates as they don’t need to pay the examination fee to Government of India from this session.
  • Redressal grievance and information related to GATE exam will be available on online applicant interface from now onwards.
  • Fifteen out of the twenty-one subjects will be conducted online. The rest of the papers will be conducted offline as usual. Possible dates for these two individual exams are 20th January and 10th February.
Gate Exam Preparation:
Along with these, some other changes are also taking place in Gate 2013 exam category. Students are allowed to use black ink only to write in the exam. The exam authority will cancel answer sheet written with other inks.
Students appearing for pre-final year exam are no more eligible to appear for this aptitude test.
Before you start filling the online form, don’t forget to have scanned photo with your scanned signature in hand. Casual photos are no more being accepted because the authority wants to ensure more safety measures.
From now onwards student will not get their admit card delivered by post, and they have to download it from the official website of GATE only. All these alterations have been done keeping the growing exam pressure in mind.
Gate Examination Result:

We have already mentioned probable dates for two individual GATE 2013 exams, but a student needs information about the exam result date also. Well, it is being said that the result for this year exam will be published on 15th March, within 10.00 hours. Students can check scores and ranking from the official GATE website.

GATE Exam Preparation

Even though more than 6,40,000 odd students apply for GATE Exam, hardly 10000 to 20000 students prepare for the GATE seriously . So u have to compete with these 20000 students all over India .Be brave and confident , your confidence is more important than anything else say your preparation also . A student with good preparation but without confidence will spoil the paper , May be a student who went to exam with little preparation , cool mind and confidence can crack the GATE easily.
So nearly five more months we have in our hand, how much u have prepared for the GATE 2013, how many books u have studied , how many problems u have studied does not matter , because no questions will be direct and repeated , the questions will test your basics and your level of understanding of the subject , how well you can apply the theory .

Now coming to GATE question papers, whether it is hard or easy its the same for everyone who is writing the exam so no problem . Some times its hard like 2003, 2012 paper but it is very easy in the case of 2004, 2011 paper , so it all depends so u people should not think about this part . Its a relative grading so it does not depend on how well u have written but how well u have written than your side one.

I will give u an analogy in cricketing words , if a batsmen goes to the crease with fear thinking that how would be the pitch , swing , bounce ,turn then he will definitely get out soon . On the other side if he is fearless and goes to crease with confidence then he will definitely score runs .
Another thing is that don’t worry whether i can do good in GATE as my percentage in university exams is very less , for people who think like that let me clarify your university percentage has nothing to do with GATE both of them are entirely different ball games all together . The student with good basics , understanding , application will definitely succeed irrespective of the percentage . All the very best for your GATE exam preparations.

GATE Preparation and Time Management

Time management is a real trick for achieving any goal in life. GATE is no exception. Recently, I have been receiving many emails and questions regarding time management for GATE exam. The questioners are either having full time job or students of final or pre final year. The answer is not easy, and every great thing is not easy in life. If someone has a full job or college to attend they need a give an extra effort by managing their time tightly. For managing time first one need to find where is the time that they can use. I have few points to share with you all regarding time management.

  • Check daily routine and write down these activities on a paper with hours. Don’t need to be very hard and strict about timing, don’t need to mention exact hour and minutes of the activity.
  • Once we have a list of activities we do in a day we also have a good idea of what we are doing in a day.
  • Figure out activities we are doing for fun and can be compromised for certain time.
  • Make use of this time for GATE preparations.
When I was student I noticed that usually I spend time in traveling and with friends without doing any productive work. My college was 13 KM away from home and used to take about 30 minutes to reach there.
The first thing I did was started using public transportation. And second thing was to go little early. By which I can get a seat in bus to go to college and I spend that travel time either for reading, revising or taking rest in bus. I was a student so I used that early hours to sit in library and prepared GATE and other exams. And another thing I did was to leave college very late may be at library closing time. I tried to make best use of library. When I finished my B.Tech, everyone knows where I am, if I am not in class. To make it great we need to sacrifice and need cut some of the thing which we love. Every time we make a hard decision by knowing what are we are doing, it will benefit us in long run. The hard work always pays us, one or the other day, in one or the other day.
The common distracters for students are
1. Travel long distance driving our own vehicles on regular basis.
2. TV serials
3. Too much unproductive time wasting friends
4. Too much sleeping
5. Spending too much in markets
6. Watching movies almost every weekend, watching them from bed till return to bed.
These are few common time consumers in life. If we manage them properly we can do many things miraculously on time. The last point is to be very consistent in our preparation. It’s not a one day job it’s a consistent effort achieve big result.
GATE is big opportunity for student who didn’t have a chance to prove, because of image issue with lectures in B.Tech. They have a golden opportunity to prove. GATE is totally an open competition and you may beat the best student of your college with consistent efforts. Your friends may tease for your change, please don’t worry about them much. They will also cherish your great achievements in future and feel great to associate themselves with you. Hard work with consistency will take you there.

How to do well in the GATE exam ?

It has been a quest for a long time for many engineering students about how to do well in the GATE exam. Is there any single success formula for it??? This article provides you the necessary tips and advice to crack GATE exam.
Well,first answer this question yourself….
What do you mean by doing well in GATE???
People have variable answers to this.
For some, doing a M.Tech has got some meaning only if you do it from the IITs.
Many fall in this category. So your score needs to be pretty high.!
For some, doing an M.Tech from IITs is not enough….the discipline is very important…how much prospect it has…go for it only if you have passion for the subject…so,say if you are looking for Microelectronics at IIT Bombay as your only option you need to have a king-size score.!
For some, doing an M.Tech is all that he wants…..very few fall into this category.
And for some, GATE for doing M.Tech???…..2 years too expensive to waste…they go for PSU jobs and get interview calls if they secure a very high rank.
And ya….a huge no. of people, if not more than 90% ,fall into this category.
The most important fact that a GATE aspirant needs to keep in mind all the time, is that if you want to do M.Tech all that matters is the GATE SCORE…the All India Rank is a meaningless number.!
Now let us discuss a few important points about how to prepare for GATE.
As a strategist, you need to know which are the topics where you can score the most giving minimum effort. These are Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude sections. If you have a good preparation you can back yourself to score the entire 30 marks allocated for this section. So these two topics need to be given the highest priority for good GATE score.
Coming to the technical section, the most important point for any candidate is that he should first sit and identify his areas of strength and weakness. The easiest way to do this is to go for a diagnostic test which is readily available in most guide books.Try to increase your confidence in the areas of strength and find out easier ways to deal with your weak areas making sure that you don’t give huge effort in grooming yourself up for these weak topics as it will not give you the bulk of the marks that you are looking for.!
Next, practice as many questions as you can. But most importantly, try to investigate a question.Don’t just look at the question and solve or go through the solved answer….try to figure out a possible conclusion from the question or some other questions answered in the process. If you come across a question which you feel is important for you, note it in a diary made separately for GATE. It’s often very useful to make a note of what goes or should go through your mind when you see the question at first glance. Let me give an example,
Find the minimum value of 4x + 41-x
If you know how to solve this, you are through.!
But in case you don’t know and you have little time, you need to hit the fovea centralis in one go.!!
So here I introduce the concept of THOUGHT PROCESS which you should generate in your own way and make a note in your diary for every question. So in this case,
Thought Process- Since a minimum no. is required, definitely we have to find one inequality.
Just looking at the sum,it’s pretty easy to understand that if we multiply 4x & 41-x we get a no. which is independent of x which is equal to 4.
So we can go for AM>=GM inequality.
Soln: AM>=GM
or, (a + b)/2 >= (ab)1/2
or, (4x + 41-x)/2 >= 2
or, (4x + 41-x) >= 4
Therefore the minimum value is 4.!
‘Thought Process’ is your own unique way of looking into a problem but should be generated whenever required. Nevermind if this takes some time & you are able to solve lesser questions per day compared to your friends, this is much more effective than running a counter and blindly solving a huge no. of questions.!
Next comes Time Management.
As usual in most competitive exams, the clock is your biggest enemy.!
The GATE paper consists of 65 questions- 30 1mark & 35 2mark questions.
Now the question is….which section to attempt first??
There can be several ways of attempting the paper & you need to experiment & find out which one suits you the best.
One thing is for sure that the speed that you have when you are starting the paper is much less than what you have at the middle of the exam. Again,it’s inevitable that there will be some amount of anxiety at the beginning & you would love to face some easy questions at this point & keep the bombarding questions to be addressed later.
Keeping these things in mind, I would personally follow this method-
I would start my paper with the 25 1mark technical questions. These are relatively easy & at least you can understand quickly weather you can solve them or not.
Next I would go for the 2marks common data questions & linked answer questions.
These include a total of 8 questions and each set of questions are linked. So if you know the topic, then you can score quickly in these sections.
Then I would go for The General Aptitude Section.(10 questions).
Upto this,I have gone through 43 questions & I would back myself up to reach upto this point in 90-110 mins.
Finally, what is left over is the 2mark technical question section(22 questions). Try to finish this within 45 mins.
So, you have taken roughly 105 + 45=150mins.
Or for that matter say 160 mins.
You have 20 more mins to go through some questions which you feel you can give a try.
One can go for any other method but the basic objective should be kept in mind…..Beat The Clock.!!
Next & perhaps the most deciding factor is Negative Marking Control.
In these remaining few months of your GATE preparation develop a mentality that you will attempt only those questions where you are sure enough to get that correct. Even 1mark can make a big difference to your rank & affect the GATE score considerably. So practice hard & try to curtail the negatives to a minimum as possible. It’s like you can take a single or push for a couple of runs or look for a boundary. But either go for a six or gift your wicket to the opposition is in no way a sensible option.!!
So in a nutshell, there is no fixed protocol for GATE success but you can follow the above techniques if you find them useful as I believe that it would built the warrior in you that is required to face deciders such as the GATE exam.!
For your GATE preparation, always remember your job in the form of SCENT-
S- Sincerity
C- Confidence
E- Effort
N- Negative Control
T- Time Management
Hope this article would be of some help for GATE aspirants.!!
All the Best.!!!
