IIT Kharagpur Organize Gate 2014 Online Exam

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering commonly known as GATE is undergoing major changes in the year 2014- 15 that is conducted for all the 21 branches. This exam is conducted for the admissions into various post graduate courses like M. Tech, M.E or Ph.D in Indian higher education system. In the year 2014 it is conducted online which is considered to be a major change in the history of this exam.

This time IIT Kharagpur is the organising institute for GATE 2014 exam. This exams provides us an opportunity for the admissions into the best colleges of India namely IISc, IIT or some other govt. funded or private institutes.

This test in likely to be conducted from 1st February to 9th  March on 6 days i.e. February 1, 2, 15, 16 and 1, 2 March. There will be 12 sessions conducted on alternate weekends. There is a provision for usage of unused weekends if the number of candidates exceeds the limit i.e. 1.6 million. If we see the last year scenario then in the last year, 15 papers were conducted online and the remaining were taken offline (Paper and Pen based). This test will be conducted in 118 cities all over the country.

But for the popular branches like Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics and Communication, Electrical Engineering, this exam will still be conducted in offline mode. This is done because the number of students appearing in these branches was more and therefore there is a need for multiple sessions which is not favouring the good conduct of this exam due to the time problem. The test will consists of multiple choice questions which include common data type questions and linked answer type questions

The online exam is very different from the offline exam. In online exam, the candidate is provided with a computer, which is connected to a server on Local Area Network (LAN), which contains questions and a separate rough sheet is provided on which the candidate will solve the questions. Then the respective answer will be marked on the option provided with the questions. There will be no separate OMR sheet provided with the exam. The answers will be recorded at a server which also keeps the track of time for the examination.

The examination is conducted with a joint working of GATE 2014 Committee and Company Partner (CP) which is responsible for the technology and operational solution for the better conduct of this exam.

In case of offline mode, there is a question paper along with OMR sheet is provided. Candidates will have to fill the OMR sheet with ball point blue or black pen. Use of gel pens or ink pens was strictly prohibited for the filling up of OMR sheet.

The examination fees for GATE 2014 are not decided yet but it will be nearly equal to the fees for GATE 2013. To encourage the girl candidates, there will be free exam for them as decided by the authorities.
